THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Program Overview

The role of the academic department chair matters more than at any other time. With so much disruption in the academic landscape, chairs provide not only strategic vision but also an important source of stability to their faculty colleagues, shape the student experience, and advance the academic agenda of their institution.

This leadership development program is designed to support new department chairs in navigating the complex, dynamic demands of their role. Participants will explore assessment insights, welcome diverse feedback, and deepen both internal and external self-awareness, laying the foundation for sustained, intentional leadership growth.

>  Program Learning Objectives

At the end of this program, department chair participants should be able to:

  • Identify their core strengths and potential derailers through self-reflection and assessment tools.
  • Demonstrate how self-awareness can be used to build and lead high-functioning academic departments.
  • Interpret feedback from self-assessments and colleagues to enhance their own self-awareness.
  • Analyze varying interpersonal styles and perspectives to more effectively engage with faculty colleagues and leaders across their institution.
  • Apply leadership strategies that promote psychological safety, collaboration, and constructive dissent in their department.
